The elements that connect us

You are a human also known as a homo sapien.

You are one person on a planet of 7.7 billion human beings. We (homo sapiens) come in all colours, shapes and sizes, we speak different languages, we live in different countries and we all like different things.

No matter what our gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, religion, beliefs, interests and skills we are all worthy of love and belonging.

(Next time you go for a walk down the street or visit a big city you observe this amazing diversity).

We are all connected by the stars.

The elements/ingredients that make up the stars and the planets are the same elements/ingredients that make up you.

Our bodies are made up of Oxygen, Carbon, Hydrogen and Nitrogen. These elements can be found in every other living creature on Earth, they also make up the Moon, the Earth and the stars.

When you look up at the night sky, remember that you are part of this Universe, you are in this Universe but most importantly of all, the Universe is within you.

We are all connected by stars.

 Hello – I’m me!

Let’s write this in our notebooks.

My name is ________________________________________.

In this big universe I live on EARTH my planet is 4.5 BILLION years old.

I am one person on a planet of 7.7 BILLION human beings.

This can make me sound very small – and perhaps I am.

But size doesn’t equal importance.

And being small doesn’t mean that my actions aren’t meaningful.

Across all space and time, there has only - and will only - ever be one me

my DNA

Take a look at yourself in the mirror, your body is made up of trillions of cells. There are many different kinds of cells and each type of cell does a different job, but the inside of almost every cell is the same. Most cells have a centre, this centre is called a Nucleus.

The Nucleus carries 99.9% of your genes!

Genes carry important information about who you are. Your genes are small parts of a chemical called DNA. In total your body has about 20,000 genes! You can think of your genes as recipes - the combination of ingredients that make up you.

Did you know?

There is nearly 2 metres of DNA squeezed into almost every tiny human cell!

Another way we are connected

DNA shows how all life on Earth is related. You share 98.8% of your DNA with chimpanzees, around 90% with Mice, and about 60% with Chickens!

Take a look at the person sitting next to you. You share 99.8% of your DNA with them. Even though we share some of the same DNA we are all unique and different and that is a wonderful thing.

Diversity is what makes Planet Earth so beautiful. We understand that each individual is unique, and recognise our individual differences - these differences can be race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, interests and skills.

A Philosopher named Aristotle refers to diversity as a symphony. If we were all the same it would be like reducing symphony to a single beat.

Activity

Using the we are all connected activity sheet, draw your favourite living thing (this can be an animal or plant).

Kindness

Definition of Kindness

According to the Oxford Dictionary is - The quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.  Self Acceptance

Question

What is being kind to you?

Kindness is being able to see the beauty in yourself, the beauty in others and the beauty in the world around you.

Kindness is free yet it’s effects are priceless, these effects can be felt for generations to come. Be gentle and kind to yourself and those around you. The more compassionate you are to yourself the more compassionate you are to others.

Growth Mindset

There are two types of mindsets we can develop, one that embraces challenges as opportunities to learn and one that avoids them, often out of fear of failing.

Through out this program we support and encourage philosophical and critical thinking, these are all part of developing our growth mindset.

  • Have an open mind

  • Ask Questions

  • See for yourself

  • Learn and discover for yourself

  • Develop your own morals, values and beliefs

We live in an amazing time for realising human potential.

We live in an era of heightened access to knowledge. Education has never been so available. The internet allows us to pursue our curiosity with an infinitude of resources. It also allows us to spread and share our discoveries, theories and ideas. Opening the space for discussion, collaboration and advancing us as a species.

You are the new philosophers, the change drivers, the discoverers, the scientists, researchers, artists, influencers.

There is a vast ocean of possibilities and you are a new wave.

Think about some of the cool things humans have created and discovered!

Activity

Together, lets think of some cool discoveries or creations human have made? We will write them up on the board.

following passions

We encourage following curiosity, for it could lead to a passion. No adventure or scientist ever discovered anything new without following curiosity. If you chose to follow it, who knows what discoveries you’ll make long the way.

Question

In your notebook lets write or draw things you curious about? This could be cars, space, animals, dinosaurs etc.

You don’t need super powers to save the planet

Let us take a look at some ordinary humans who are doing remarkable things. These are people who are following and trusting in their curiosity and using the skills and knowledge they have to alter the world around them.

We don’t need super powers to make a difference

Madison Stewart

Madison Stewart is a phenomenal young lady from the Gold Coast who, has dedicated her life to protecting sharks. Madi has produced some amazing short videos and documentaries that raise awareness around the importance of sharks and the current threats to their existence. She has written comprehensive guides to safer surfing, exposed Mercury in shark meat and replaced shark fishing with tourism.

Madis current project : Project Hui

In 2018, a small team lead by Madi travelled to one of Indonesia’s largest shark fisheries with one intention, to befriend a shark fisherman. In a world where shark stocks are collapsing, where shark fishermen fish for survival. There is one trade, that can rival the multi million-dollar shark trade. One trade that can save sharks and people, a trade that thrives on something that wont go extinct, tourism.

Question

Who inspires you?

You might be inspired by your parents, your siblings, your friends, a celebrity. Remember like you these people are humans. They share 99.8% of their DNA with you and they are made up of the same chemical elements as you, the stars, the moon and Earth.

WORKING TOGETHER

Each of us has something different to bring to the world, when we work together we can create wonderful things. Some of us want to be Doctors, or scientists, some of us want to be engineers, or zoo keepers. No matter what we want to be or do it is all this diversity, all these skills, ideas and passions that come together to create something beautiful.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

In 2015, representatives from every country on Earth agreed to 17 goals to end poverty, fight inequality and live sustainability.

They are called the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (or the SDGs).

These goals address problems that every child, adult, school, business and government can work towards solving. These goals rely on diversity (different people bringing different skills and knowledge to the various goals) so that all the goals can be completed.

Activity

Together we are a symphony

Let’s celebrate our differences. Trace around your hand and fill it will all the things you love. You can draw or write words, it doesn’t matter. This is all about you.
